What "Center of Gravity" Actually Means Here

A face angle tells you where a shot starts. Where the mass sits behind that face tells you how it climbs, how far it spins, and how forgiving the whole thing feels on a mishit. This page walks through both without the marketing language.

The Measurement

How the Fixture Pins It Down

A clubhead rests against two fixed reference points on the fixture — one tied to the sole plane, one tied to the face — and settles into a position dictated entirely by its own mass distribution. Two distances get recorded from that resting position: height off the sole, and depth from the face. Plotted together, that's the center of gravity. It's a physical reading, not a description someone typed on a box.

Height

Vertical placement, from near the sole up toward the crown. Lower generally means the ball comes off easier and higher; higher generally means a flatter, more controlled window.

Depth

Front-to-back placement, from right behind the face out toward the rear cavity. Deeper trades toward forgiveness and spin; shallower trades toward control and workability.

Quadrant

Height and depth together sort into four rough zones — low-back, low-forward, high-back, high-forward — and each one plays noticeably differently even at identical loft.

Where Loft Falls Short

Identical Numbers, Different Results

Loft is one angle. It doesn't describe anything about mass distribution behind the face. Two heads can carry the exact same stated loft while one sits noticeably lower and deeper than the other — which explains why swapping to a head with a "matching" loft number can still feel like an entirely different club.

Descriptive terms like "low-spin" or "max forgiveness" aren't standardized either. A "low-spin" label from one manufacturer can measure closer to a mid-CG design from a competitor once both actually sit on the fixture.

Moment of Inertia

How much a head resists twisting off-center. Tends to rise as mass moves lower and further back — which is why forgiveness and CG placement travel together more often than not.

Face Progression

How far forward the leading edge sits relative to the hosel. Interacts with CG depth to change how the head looks at address and how it releases at impact.

Swingweight

A separate feel measurement, though it frequently shifts alongside CG placement — more mass pulled to the perimeter typically plays a touch heavier at an identical static weight.

What the face presents at impact, combined with your attack angle, determines how much a given CG quadrant actually raises or lowers spin for your specific delivery.
