The Balance Fixture, Explained

Golfers who've never seen one usually picture something complicated. It isn't. A balance fixture is a fairly simple mechanical setup, and most of what makes it useful is consistency — the same reference points, the same procedure, every single head, every single time.

How the Reading Actually Works

We seat the head in the fixture against two fixed reference points, one relative to the sole plane and one relative to the face. The head settles into a resting position determined entirely by where its mass is distributed. From that resting position we record two distances: how far the CG sits from the sole reference, and how far it sits from the face reference. Those two numbers, plotted together, are the head's CG position.

Why It Has to Happen Before the Launch Monitor

A launch monitor tells you what happened on a given swing. It can't tell you why a head produced that result unless you already know something about the head itself. Reading CG placement first gives every launch monitor session a baseline to compare against — without it, you're only ever looking at outcomes, never causes.

What It Catches That a Spec Sheet Doesn't

Manufacturer spec sheets list loft, lie, and sometimes a marketing description like "mid-CG" or "back-weighted." Those descriptions are directionally useful but not precise, and they can drift between model years even when the name stays the same. A fixture reading replaces the description with an actual number, which is the only way to compare two heads from different manufacturers on equal footing.
